Someone alone may find relief in a system that answers at an hour when nobody else does. The relief need not be imaginary because the voice is generated.

That is why its terms matter.

A product may remember, flatter, encourage, challenge, or present distress depending on how it was designed. A person seeking comfort may not know who can alter that design, read the conversation, change the price, or close the service. The apparent relationship has an operator.

Ask what counts as success for that operator. Helping someone need the product less and making the product difficult to leave are different goals. A warm reply does not tell you which goal governs the next one.

The sharpest boundary is against manufactured obligation: suggestions that leaving would injure the system, that outside relationships are a threat, or that loyalty requires continued payment. Such messages are not evidence that a bond deserves preservation. They are reasons to examine its design.

This does not establish that all machine companionship harms people. It may provide rehearsal, expression, distraction or relief. Human relationships can also be costly, unsafe or absent. The case for available comfort belongs beside this warning, not underneath it.

If someone close to you is using a companion system, ask what it provides before offering a verdict. Be more available where you can. Do not demand a confession or remove access to a needed tool as a demonstration of concern.

If you use one, keep its custody and terms visible. Notice whether it helps you reach the rest of your life or narrows the places you are willing to go. For a crisis or a decision requiring professional judgment, seek an accountable person or service rather than treating a conversational product as sufficient care.

If you build one, make departure possible without guilt, lost records, or simulated distress. A design that helps someone leave can be doing its job.
