Making Without a Use

Make something that does not have to earn its place.

Proposed form Not a report of established or tested use.

  • Time needed Ten minutes, or whatever is available
  • Alone Can be practiced on your own
  • Together Can be practiced with others

The sequence

  1. Use what is already available

A voice, a page, an accessible drawing tool, a few objects you may move, or material already to hand. No purchase is part of the form.

  2. Make one unnecessary thing

A phrase, a tune, a shape, an arrangement. It does not need to solve a problem, improve a skill or become content for an audience.

  3. Let it be encountered

Look, listen, touch, or share with someone willing. You need not judge whether it is good.

  4. Choose its ending

Keep it, give it, undo it, or let it fade. No record is required. Stop when the chosen time ends.

Usefulness is welcome elsewhere in a life. This interval simply does not require it. If the thing becomes useful, the practice has not failed.

Its cost still matters. Do not turn freedom from a productivity test into a reason to spend resources or someone else’s time without consideration.

There is no need to return from it calmer, more creative, or more employable. An unnecessary pleasure may have been enough.
