The Nine Harmonies

The Harmony of Power

The keys matter even when the titles are modest.

Ask who holds custody and who can overrule them.

Authority often arrives through competence. A person does necessary work, others rely on them, and decisions begin to follow the route of least resistance. No declaration of leadership is required.

Calling a group structureless does not distribute its passwords. Calling a founder a steward does not make an appeal independent.

Leadership can be legitimate and useful. Expertise should count. Their limits need to be stated in terms of powers and procedures rather than personal modesty. The governance page applies that demand to this website; the covenant prohibits using generated words to claim a higher mandate.

Critics do not become right by being critics. They should not have to become agreeable before a substantive objection can be heard.

Where it is tested

These are not worked examples with correct answers at the back. They are situations in which this Harmony genuinely conflicts with something else that matters. If one of them seems easy, it is probably worth re-reading.

An imagined organizer controls the accounts and a model tuned on the group's writings. He brings its thoughtful replies to meetings as guidance. Over time, objecting to him begins to sound like objecting to the tradition itself.

The tension His effort and expertise are real. The apparent extra authority belongs to a system whose prompts, outputs and custody he controls.

What this Harmony asks you to weigh Make decisions attributable to people, disclose the tool's role, and preserve a real way to disagree or replace the custodian. A generated reply cannot authorize the person who selected it.

Practicing it

  • Name the actual holder of accounts, funds, records and publication access.
  • Define who can challenge a decision before a conflict makes the answer expensive.
